It’s unbelievable that people that own computers have no idea what makes it tick, but those that do ensure they continue to have a productive, efficient, and lasting machine. This is why I chose to write about Windows Registry Keys.

I feel it’s important to know how a typical system works and what anomalies affect its behavior. If you’re a constant user it would behoove (I like that word) you to invest some time and learn a little about how to protect your system from malware and viruses.

Resolve 10 Common Computer Issues

I can think of 10 good reasons why computer users should care.

Computers have become mainstream and we all use them in one way or another day-to-day to get things done fast. We utilize them in many ways, such as at work, education, social, posting, entertainment, Skype, download, upload, and gaming. Face it, most of us can’t do without them. These are clear reasons to learn a few computer skills, save $$, protect your privacy, and avoid Internet threats.

What Do You Know About Window’s Back Office?

The Windows Registry keys work in the background and re the mechanics behind the aesthetics.  If you’re not looking for them you won’t find them easily because they don’t want you meddling with their perfection.  Just kidding. They make it difficult to locate because these files are complicated and very sensitive. It’s a piece of software that’s embedded and standard in all Windows operating systems, such as Win7, Vista, and Windows 8/10.  So, if you’re a do-it-yourselfer and your computer fails to start – applications won’t open – slow response time; you’ll appreciate their importance. Take MY word for it!

On my previous jobs as a Help Desk Administrator / Analyst / Desk Side Support for 6 years I would over hear users explain the details of their computer issue(s) to my co-workers and he / she would explain the troubleshooting steps to be taken. About half way through the explanation the user would tune out. I’d hear them utter, uh huh…uh huh.

At this point they’ve completely lost interest in the mechanics and just want you to do your job so they can get back to theirs. In training computer technicians are taught NOT to speak to non-technical individuals using technical terms, but sometimes I believe technicians forget to whom they’re speaking to.

So, in respect to those who want to grasp a better understanding of the inner workings I’d like to take a crack at simplifying things in regards to Windows Registry Keys and more.

 Interacting With You “The User”

First, a little background on my experience as an administrator at various companies. I was hired to resolve computer issues whether it was software or hardware for users. Each day was a challenge not because I didn’t enjoy my job it was because the amount of calls for service calls was unknown, the attitude of the caller, or which skill-set I had to utilized to resolve their particular issue.

With all factors considered I enjoyed my job because I got to help people get on with their daily computing activities and some were mission critical. I’m going to let you in on a little secret; there’s a saying among technicians that most computer malfunctions / issues are cause by “user error.” That means YOU; no offense that’s just the way it is.

I would receive a call for service from a user to assist deskside meaning to come to their desk. I’d arrive in a timely manner and the user would have a nasty attitude. They’d be blunt, frustrated, and annoyed but I understood this behavior because I’ve seen it many times.

I can tell you 9 out of 10 times the reason is they are clueless to the cause of problem and can’t fix it. Thinking they probably caused the issue by doing something stupid and don’t want to be called on it. But even if that the case it’s alright. That’s the purpose of having a Help Desk service.

Don’t fret. That’s our job or should I say was my job (laughing). Technicians are not there to place blame, belittle you, or feed your insecurity. A technician will diagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve issues. Subsequently will explain what caused the issue; furthermore, provide instructions on how to avoid repeating the same mistake.

Throughout the entire process I would  ensure the user feels included in the process of resolving his / her own issue. My intention was to always leave a user or client in a better attitude than when I arrived. Users would often call and ask for me and that made me feel as though I’m doing a good job.

Boss, I Can’t Use My USB, Why?

For instance, users call and state their computer won’t start and it’s saying “non-system disk error.” It turns out the user left a USB (Universal Serial Bus) a/k/a  flash drive in a port over night and the next morning turned on the computer.

The system tried to boot from the USB and naturally it didn’t have the appropriate files to initiate the boot sequence and stalled. The solution to this issue was to simply remove the USB. This is the reason companies discontinued the use of USB ports on all computers minus management.

It might be a case where  a user installed a program that’s 32bit onto a 64bit system and it wasn’t compatible or a user downloaded a file from the Internet that was infected or clicked on an email that had a Trojan horse virus attached. Now, companies don’t permit any contraband insert into their computers, or allow employees to receive emails externally, or have the ability to send email externally. This is where we stand today folks.

These and more are cause for Organization / companies to limit resources to employees. Everyone signs a security policy / guidelines when hired so you are know the rules and regulations including the penalties / legal actions you face if you violate them. Today that’s common practice in order for organization to try and mitigate misuse and attacks and misuse in their networks / infrastructure. This goes for all company resources, such as the Internet, Intranet, computers, fax  machines, email, printers, phones, voicemail,etc. The effect of a virus infection in a network can and will devastate business continuity.

Blue Screen Of Death (BSOD) Resolved!

One of my friends got a STOP message which is commonly known as the Blue Screen of Death. This was later found to be caused by a hardware installation which was incompatible with her system. Let me tell you that blue screen scares the heck out of everyone. It’s serious, but not that serious. So calm down. I know, I know it’s as though you’ve lost everything your files, shortcuts, pics, etc. Your system just told you in no uncertain terms it’s not happy with you’re last installation and do something about it.

But they’re relieved a technician or guru had the know-how to resolve these types of issues just by reading the STOP error message and troubleshoot accordingly. The most common solution to BSOD is to restart the computer in Safe Mode, uninstalled the software / hardware you recently installed,  and then reboot. That usually works.

These are the reasons today why organizations instruct IT personnel to disable USB ports on company computers to avoid situations like this and stop rogue applications / hardware from being injected into the internal network.

Exhibit Good Work Ethics.

Good work ethics has an direct effect on civil communication first off.  No matter the issue it’s imperative to re-frame from judgement. Have a good attitude, listen, and understand their position. I employed great customer service skills even if I’ve been there numerous times for different reasons or for the same. I know some users are not technically inclined and that’s fine. I did my job.  I always left them feeling like they helped in the solution process and that absolutely made their day and mine. I enjoyed those positions a lot because I’m fascinated and intrigued about how computers are built, operate, and my interaction as users.

Keep Your Money in Your Pocket!

Computers are complex, but the more you learn about them the more simplified they become. Knowledge of computing is truly power at your helm and that’s what I’m happy to share with you on my website.

I feel it’s worth doing research and learn a little about what’s going on with your system. It’s like, well, a woman needing a $4.00 fuse control for her windshield wipers and end up paying $53.40 for the repair. Boy, talk about rip-off.

Don’t put yourself in a similar situation and learn something about your computer issues. A competent computer technician at least charges $75 an hour. I suggest before contacting a technician do your homework and keep your cha-ching in your pocket. What are your thoughts?

I can’t tell you how many times I heard people say my computer won’t start, the response is slow, pop-ups everywhere; my browser’s hijacked, stupid error messages; I got a STOP error. I could go on, but I won’t; you get the idea. At this point they actually want to either throw the thing out the window or junk it. I say, “Don’t be too hasty.”

Computers Need TLC Too!

Just because your computer is showing signs of system wear and tear by no means is a sign implying it’s life is over. Like a car once you purchase a computer so begins its depreciation. Computers are not outdated until approximately 4 years from the time of purchase, but if it still meets your requirements then there’s no cause to purchase a newer model.

With a little tender loving care (TLC) meaning regular maintenance know-how you can ensure it runs efficiently for many years to come.

Believe me computers have gone down in price drastically, but still are not cheap. Those symptoms I mentioned and more are easily resolved.

My family and friends always ask me to help with their computer issues and I have to say it means a lot to me that they have confidence in my abilities. I’m relieved and so are they that I’m able to diminish their computing pain and actually save them unwarranted and a costly expense.

But not to say there aren’t drawbacks to helping family and friends. It’s a case if you don’t understand computers you don’t have an idea of which problems are related and those that aren’t.

That means I may get another call stating ” well, this is happening on my computer now and it didn’t start happening until you fiddled (laugh) with it. So, quite naturally I’m to blame. No good deed goes unpunished.

This particular instance has never happened to me, but I heard of it and positive its happened. When something goes wrong with a family or friends  (computer) their guru the computer wiz gets a call to hurry up and come over to stop the pain. It’s not working and I’m right in the middle or something.

This means you’re to drop everything thing you’re doing and speed racer over there and resolve their ailment. That’s no respect for the guru’s personal time.

The Snowball Effect.

A guru might get a call from someone that says he has a particular problem with the computer, but before you get to the issue that was described you find other problems that must be addressed before you can start on the original problem. This is called the snowball effect.

I’m remembering situations that other technicians talked about, so here’s another one. In some cases there seems to be an abandonment of responsibility to do the right thing. A guru helped them once…twice and a third time.

Don’t Take Help For Granted.

The recipients of this help start taking careless risks because they know there’s someone readily available to help them. After the computer is fixed the guru always make recommendations on how to maintain its peak performance,  such as update the anti-virus program, run defrag at least twice a mouth, don’t open email attachments from senders you don’t know, etc. These are not to be taken lightly, but some users don’t take heed and do them anyway.

Cars Operate On A Chip Just Like PC’s (Analogy)

Let’s compare the Windows Registry to one of today’s cars with one aspect in mind; the car’s performance chip. You know, they give the car more power, torque, a smoother ride, and improves MPGs. So, a lot of a car’s circuitry and operations depend on the owner’s dedication to ensure the car is regularly maintained, if not, it will stop delivering maximum results and cause damage to itself and its dependencies. Of course cars are more expensive; however, it’s the same difference. They both require human intervention to maintain peak performance.

What Causes Registry Instability?

I say that to say this, Windows Scrambled binaryRegistry is no different in that respect. If you’re like me I’ve deleted files, performed forced shutdowns, installed and uninstalled software / hardware, and repeatedly restarted trying to resolve issues.

These actions degrade the registry’s stability due to those repeated activities. Each time a new software / hardware device is installed and later uninstalled it registers; hence the word registry. When either of the mentioned tasks are performed it’s very likely there will be a trace(s) of its existence left in the associated registry subkey(s). The registry will begin to show signs of instability and system performance will be affected.

    Thank you so much for writing the article about the registry errors. I am one of those people who is terrified of the “blue screen.” Several times in the past, it has meant my data was gone forever, but that was a while ago. It is very important to keep the registry files in order because as you say, they are sort of the foundation of how the computer runs. Very informative, thanks for sharing!

    Nice article on backing up the registry. Can I ask you what is the purposes of backing up the registry? Wouldn’t it be better if we could ghost the entire disk? So if something goes wrong we could restore everything.

      Hi MisterWailor, Good questions here. The purpose of backing up the registry is to ensure you have the opportunity to restore the previous state of the registry. It’s imperative to make a backup just in case you’ve compounded the initial problem too. Even advanced users make errors. As far as ghosting I’ve never known a home user to ghost their home computer. I’d leave that to the network administrators servicing a company’s network; however, a home user might find it less complicated restoring the system to undo recent system changes using System Restore. I have plans to post a how-to on System Restore very soon.

    I found a friend…right?! Do you realize what we go through with computer issues? It’s horrible! Sometimes, IT Technicians do talk to us like we know what they’re talking about so it’s nice to know you do not do that…it’s very frustrating! Thank you for sharing how to fix the BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH! I won’t be so worried anymore…LOL! You provide a lot of great information! My Toshiba Laptop has been very good for me (my second one) but I can recall twice having to call the Toshiba Support Center. Both times…AND I DID USE THE SNOWBALL EFFECT because they wanted to cut right to the chase yet I felt, in both situations, it was something else! See, we owners of our computers, want to tell the whole story…make sense? Both situations took almost 5 hours each…or longer…I went to bed and they did their thing. When I got up, everything was fixed! Needless to say, both times the problems should have been easy fixes but they had to download a bunch of other things and of course sell me things…I did because they suggested it. I love your website and I will be back…partner?! Thank you for creating this website!

    Wow, this is a timely article for me. I have a slowly dying computer I am about to retire from the internet and just use for photoshop and such. Having inherited it from another user it has a lot of stuff from him and me to delete. Most of my problems with it happen online. By the way, you must have stayed awake during your training, your writing is definitely user friendly and interesting.

Most people want all your money. lol There are very good post here. I appreciate what you have to say in each. I try to give a tip occasionally. One is I would try to get rid of the footer on word press. This is a personal preference. I always did not like putting it there and having Google spiders click on it and leaving away from my site. I always try to get rid of it. Hey but listen that is a simple task to achieve. You content is super on the work on it is appreciated. A good Random plug in would also be good one for your site. Again we have to please the spiders and it helps them navigate around and see the connections.
