Computer Virus Symptoms

Startup and Shutdown

The startup (boot) process takes longer to complete. The shutdown process takes longer. This is probably caused by identical values, corrupt data, fragments of uninstall applications, and hard shutdowns. The registry must scan for related files to complete the task.

Computer freezes

In this case the computer stops responding to the mouse, keyboard or both. It stops responding in the middle of typing a Word document or playing a game. You try Task Manager (Ctrl + Alt + Del) and it’s rendered powerless (not responding). Task Manager allow users to view currently running tasks or end apps / background processes. If this doesn’t work you’re in trouble.

Malware Infections

The computer most likely been infected with a virus, such as a Trojan horse. This virus can alter the path in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Shell which infects the explorer.exe file. The computer will start up another file although you requested (clicked) to start Internet Explorer.

Computer Crashes

This is usually cause by conflicting software, hardware installations and / or corrupted registry. If the first two are troubleshot and proved not the issue then it’s the registry. When a system crash occurs the monitor will display the Blue Screen of Death a/k/a BSOD as seen below. Nobody, but nobody wants to see this.

Installation and Upgrade Issues

Experiencing error messages during an installation or upgrade of software or hardware is not uncommon. It’s surely suggesting there is a problem in the registry. It’s either missing, corrupted, or has duplicate files within it’s registry subkey.
